some time or any movement whatever.

The earthwork bank is very close now to Bridge 13 and great care is being taken in backing it up and loading the haunching so as to make the pressure as even as possible.

Before starting this the District

Engineer examined the bridge

most carefully and discovered two hair cracks which are being

watched as the work proceeds. They are almost microscopic

and may be only due to the shrinkage of the cement pointing.

No increase has been discovered in these and I do not attach any

importance to them at present.

Bridge 18 is complete to the springing level of arching.

Bridges 30 and 33 Girders are all on the top of the

piers but not in place yet.

Bridge 33A - Arrangements are being made to start this

bridge as the specimens taken from the trial pit shewn to

Mr A.J.Barry were satisfactory and the boring put down in the

pat showed the same coarse gravel.

Bridge 48

Brickwork making good progress and should

be completed this month.

Bridge 49 The foundation for the pier on south side

was taken down to the rock or rather the semi decomposed rock.

The superstructure on this pier is now above water level.

collection is also progressing slowly all along the coast to

Taipo.

16. On stations the only work in progress is the jetty

at Taipo.

All the steel piles are now in place the end ones

being 58 feet 6 inches long which is much longer than was

thought at first necessary.
